On Sunday May 25 Venezuelans are headed to the polls for legislative and regional elections which will elect 285 National Assembly deputies and 24 governors. As a stark reminder that these elections are taking place under the boot of U.S. imperialism, the Venezuelan Interior Ministry announced on May 19 that 38 mercenaries acting on behalf of the U.S.-backed right-wing Venezuelan opposition had been arrested for plotting terrorist attacks to sabotage the elections.
An international elections observation delegation will be in the country to observe the elections and the dynamics of the Bolivarian Revolution’s participatory democracy in action. The international observers will have the opportunity not only to engage directly with people in Venezuela on voting day, but to also observe the impact of the continued US-led sanctions on Venezuela and the people of Venezuela mobilized in defense of their sovereignty and self-determination.
